Invention is not innovation.
Many moments that genuinely changed the course of history were not the first time a concept was made real. They were the first time it was systematised, standardised, and embedded in economic and social structures—turned into a reproducible “technology–institution combination” that could operate at scale.
Take the steam engine. Primitive prototypes existed as early as the seventeenth century, and Newcomen's steam engine predated Watt's. Yet these machines were inefficient, narrow in use, and expensive to maintain. They were closer to experimental technologies.
Watt's contribution was partly technical improvement. More importantly, he formed stable partnerships with businesses, capital, the mining industry, and other sectors. He turned the steam engine into a systemic solution that could be widely purchased, installed, maintained, and billed for. In this sense, the historical significance of the “age of Watt” does not lie in who first imagined using steam to perform work. It lies in the moment steam power became a general-purpose source of energy capable of supporting an industrial system. This was the leap from one to one hundred.
Printing followed a similar pattern. Movable type had appeared in China and Korea, but it did not trigger the same chain of religious reform, knowledge expansion, and reconstruction of the public sphere that it did in Europe. The decisive question was not whether movable type had been invented. Europe's linguistic structure—alphabetic writing was well suited to movable type—combined with the cost of paper, urban commercial networks, textual demand from universities and churches, and the propaganda struggles created by religious conflict. Together, these conditions turned printing into a historical event that transformed both knowledge production and the structure of power.
Technology is never an isolated object. It is always embedded in a way of life and an institutional order. Whether a technology can move from one to one hundred depends to a great extent on whether society is willing to change its habits, reorganise the division of labour, adjust power relations, and even tolerate a period of inequality and disruption. Many apparently advanced inventions died out because the social cost they demanded exceeded what people at the time were willing to bear.
The important question is not only “Who can make it?” but “Who can turn it into a world that can be reproduced and sustained?”
